LIGHT IN LIGHTING PRACTICE
Experience and Management of a Dynamic Invasive Medium
by Caroline Vilbrandt. 5th May 2025. 3pm-6pm. Rooms 408-409.
The presentation highlights light as a dynamic medium: from historical light sources to LED technology, including practical experiments. Physical basics such as the nature of waves and particles as well as light spectra are covered. The interaction of light and vision will be discussed, as well as types of light, reasons for use and legal requirements. Unwanted effects of light such as light pollution are also considered. A cultural comparison shows different understandings of light. Finally, lighting design is experienced and reflected in a practical way.
Deactivating Waves: Reverberations between Design and Anthropology
For this year’s STADTLABOR FOR MULTIMODAL ANTHROPOLOGY: SUMMER SERIES 2024-2025, the ERC team has organised a series of events that explore the intersection between design and anthropology and the capacities of materials to shield, protect, insulate and condition spaces and places. In the workshops and talks we will investigate, from the perspective of design practice, how material interact with anthropology as a multimodal tool. during the semester, designers will share with us how they engage in wave-material research and how those waves particularly shape their design pathways and triggers imagination.
All events will take place at the Institute for European Ethnology (IfEE). Rooms 408-409.
